<p>The region known as the San Rafael Desert is bordered by the Green River to the east and the San Rafael Reef to the west. This area receives scant amounts of rainfall each year. Small dune fields such as this are scattered throughout the area as prevailing southerly winds create small furrows on their surfaces. The sandstone formations found in this region today had their origins as large sand dunes which covered this area millions of years ago and now complete the cycle by eroding back into shifting dunes. Mount Temple rises to 6,880 feet above the San Rafael Reef on the distant horizon. This vertical photograph was captured with a 6x7 format camera.
