Evening light on White Dome Peak in the Weminuche Wilderness Area in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado. This unnamed lake sits at an elevation over 12,000 feet just below the crest of the Continental Divide. At 488,210 acres, the Weminuche Wilderness Area is Colorados largest. The total area of this mountain range exceeds 4,000 square miles. These mountains form the headwaters of the San Juan River, one of the largest tributaries of the Colorado River system. Volcanic in origin, these mountains began to rise during the Laramide Orogeny which began about 60 million years ago. The glacier-sculpted terrain evidenced today is mostly a result of the recent ice-age advances which ended about 12,000 years ago. This photograph was captured on 6x7 format film.
