A soft layer in the Carmel Formation of southern Utah has been laid bare by the harsh desert conditions here along the southern edge of the Kaiparowits Plateau. The infrequent cloudbursts which hammer this area in late summer continue to erode this extremely soft formation into bizarre dripping hillsides resembling melted candle wax. The occasional rock which falls from the cliffs above will prevent these pounding rains from eroding the rock beneath to create surreal pinnacles and towers within this layer. This vertical photograph was captured with a 6x7 format camera. All photos in these fine art photo galleries may be ordered as fine art framed prints or for stock photography usage.
