Photograph of Antelope Canyon. Around high noon every day as the sun moves across the sky, an occassional shaft of sunlight will find an opening into the convoluted sandstone narrows of Antelope Canyon. These fleeting shafts of light quickly move across the floor of the canyon and vanish within a few minutes; only to be replaced by another sunbeam a few minutes later. Bathed in warm reflected sunlight, these sensuous curves continually change their moods as the sun wheels overhead. With our limited grasp of deep time, it is difficult to comprehend the tiny amount of geologic time required to cut this canyon no less the 190 million years which have elapsed since this sandstone was deposited in a vast sea of shifting sand reminiscent of todays Sahara.
