Mooney Falls, Havasu Creek. Mooney Falls plunges 190 feet into an enormous aquamarine-colored pool along Havasu Creek on the Havasupai Nation in the Grand Canyon of Northern Arizona. Travertine ledges form along the creek as a result of the high concentration of dissolved calcium carbonate which precipitates out when exposed to the air. The stream begins as a large spring several miles above the village of Supai. Mooney Falls received its name in 1880 when a sailor named James Mooney and his companions were exploring the area near Havasu Falls in search of minerals. According to Mooneys companions, James Mooney fell to his death when trying to climb up the falls. His body was encased in travertine when they retrieved it the next year.
