How the Prints are Made / Fine-Art Printing Specifications

Our prints are produced by Photo Craft Imaging in Boulder, Colorado. James initially contacted Photocraft due to their extraordinary reputation in the fine-art printing world. After reviewing the results of their work, James settled on them to produce his fine-art prints. Under the guidance of imaging wizard extraordinaire Mr. John Botkin, the printing process begins when John scans one of Jim's transparencies on his Aztec Digital Photolab drum scanner to produce a digital file. This information is then entered into John's CSI Lightjet digital printer where the final print is produced on traditional photographic paper. The CSI LightJet is the ultimate fine-art photographic printer. Instead of using an incandescent light bulb as in an old-style enlarger, the CSI Lightjet uses red, green, and blue lasers to expose the photographic paper. This process produces a sharpness, image control, and fidelity never before obtained via the old-style overhead enlargers.

As our photographic paper of choice, Fuji Crystal Archive paper is the accepted standard for "fine-art" photographic gallery prints. This exceptional paper offers the vivid color and contrast of Cibachrome paper with twice the archival life expectancy. Under normal viewing conditions, Fuji Corporation claims that the rich colors in your print will show no sign of color shift or fading for a period of 40-60 years even without the added protection of regular glass. Once John finishes the print, it is rolled up and shipped back to Jim for his signature and limited-edition numbering. If you've ordered a print without matting or framing, your print is then rolled up in a tube and shipped via 3-day Fedex.

If your print requires matting and/or framing, we deliver it to our framer who uses the highest-quality wood frames and matting material available on the market today. We use archival acid-free mounting board and provide double mats in archival museum-grade warm white. We use a high-quality optical glass for our standard framing glass and a glass upgrade option for customers wishing to eliminate the reflective properties of standard glass.

To ensure that your framed print arrives undamaged, we use heavily-cushioned cardboard boxes for prints up to 20x25 or 10x30 and sturdy wooden crates for all larger sizes. We ship via UPS or Bax Global. Since we offer such a wide variety of images and framing choices, we are not able to maintain a large print inventory. As soon as you place your order, production begins. The entire printing, framing, and shipping process is very labor intensive so please be patient after placing your order; it may take as little as 3 weeks for a framed print to arrive on your doorstep or up to 6 weeks during our busiest season.
