Evening light illuminates sandstone towers in this photograph of the Fiery Furnace in Arches National Park. These pinnacles of Entrada sandstone were formed as a vast salt dome underlying this area bulged upwards and cracked the overlying layers of brittle sandstone to form myriads of long sandstone fins. Many of these fins now contain the arches this park is so famous for. Even today, as the underlying salt is exposed to the processes of erosion, rainwater easily dissolves and continues to flush these salts down the Colorado River. Rising to nearly 13,000' in the distance, the La Sal (salt) Mountains reflect late February light from a recent dusting of snow. This panoramic photograph was captured with a 6x17 panorama format camera. All photos in these fine art photo galleries may be ordered as fine art framed prints or for stock photography usage.
