These sinuous narrows along Wetherill Canyon were once 60 feet below the surface of Lake Powell. As the water level of the reservoir began to drop in the year 2000 due to a regional drought, 30 feet of accumulated reservoir sediment was washed out of these narrows by flash floods thus restoring the pre-reservoir conditions found here. Due to the narrow nature of this canyon, the reservoir's white "bathtub ring" has been scoured away by the high-velocity sand-filled water which roars through these narrows during flash floods.
