Located in the Circle Cliffs region of southern Utah, Wolverine Petrified Wood Natural Area contains the petrified remains of a 225 million-year old forest. Found within the Chinle Formation, this layer of sediment was deposited at a time when this region was covered with a thick, steaming tropical rainforest reminiscent of todays Amazon basin. A far cry from the desiccated landscape we see today, this tropical jungle thrived when North America was much closer to the equator than it is today. When a tree fell into the oxygen-poor waters of the swamp, individual cells in the wood were slowly replaced with dissolved minerals in the water until the entire tree was turned to stone. This photograph was captured on 6x7 format film. All photos in these galleries may be ordered as fine art black & white framed prints or for stock photography usage.
