Located in the northeast corner of Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, this small alcove along Long Canyon has hosted visiting groups of Tibetan Buddhist monks clad in their traditional flowing maroon robes and golden sashes. The monks soon discovered that the unique architecture of the alcove provides exceptional acoustic qualities for their traditional chants. While this small tributary canyon of the Escalante River may be a long way from Tibet, the nearby town of Boulder has hosted groups of Buddhist monks on several occasions over the years. These alcoves are usually created when water finds a fault in the sandstone block and begins to carve it away. This panoramic photograph was captured with a Fuji GX 617 panorama camera. All photos in these galleries may be ordered as fine art black & white framed prints or for stock photography usage.
