A small remnant of a once vast granitic plateau, 11,695 foot Squaretop Mountain looms above the headwaters of the Green River, one of the great rivers of the American West. During the Pleistocene epoch, enormous glaciers, thousands of feet thick, carved valleys on both sides of Squaretop to create its unique profile. The waters of the Green momentarily pause here in Upper and Lower Green River Lakes as the river begins its long journey through the canyons of the Southwest. On its journey south, the Green merges with the waters of the Colorado River deep in the heart of Canyonlands National Park. By the time these waters reach the Sea of Cortez, dams and diversions have reduced the flow so much that the river usually dies in the sands of its delta before reaching the sea.
