San Rafael Desert, Utah. The region of Utah located between the Green River and the San Rafael Reef receives scant amounts of rainfall each year. Small dune fields such as this are scattered throughout the area as prevailing southerly winds create small furrows on their surfaces. The sandstone formations found in this region today had their origins as large sand dunes which covered this area millions of years ago and now complete the cycle by eroding back into shifting dune fields. Mount Temple rises to 6,880 feet above the San Rafael Reef on the distant horizon. All photos in these galleries may be ordered as fine art framed prints or for stock photography usage.
