| San Juan River, Utah. A patch of drying mud expands into an intricate network of cracks under an early-October sun at the mouth of Slickhorn Gulch just off the San Juan river in southern Utah. These fine clays and silts had been deposited earlier in the year as the river rose up to fill these pools at the mouth of Slickhorn Gulch and were now drying out. The deep limestone & sandstone canyons of the San Juan River provide one of the best multi-day float trips in the west. While autumn flows are usually reduced to a trickle, this previous summer had been wet and flows were still high enough for an easy 85-mile float through the canyon.
