| Coyote Buttes, Arizona. What appears to be a tortured past for these sandstone layers today provides for a spectacular display of light, texture and detail. This multi-hued striped sandstone canyon is unique even here in the Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness, where amazing patterns and textures wait to be discovered around every bend. The vivid striping in this section of rock resulted from the precipitation of manganese, iron and other oxides which were contained in the water which percolated through these rocks when they were sand dunes approximately 190 million years ago.
