| Telluride, Colorado. The ideal habitat for aspen trees in the San Juan Mountains of southwestern Colorado is around 9,000 feet. The combination of temperatures, well-drained soils and precipitation at this altitude creates the most robust specimens of this member of the willow family. The high- altitude mesas and mountainsides all around the town of Telluride provide ample habitat for some of the most magnificent groves in the west. This grove is located high above the South Fork of the San Miguel River 5 miles south of Telluride.
