San Juan Mountains, Colorado. Aptly-named 13,627' White Dome Peak rises above the headwaters of Elk Creek in the Weminuche Wilderness in the San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado. At 401,600 acres, the Weminuche ranks as Colorado's largest congressionally-designated wilderness area and contains some of the most rugged and wild mountain terrain in the American West. This extensive range of mountains began to rise at the beginning of the Laramide Orogeny about 60 million years ago and contains thirteen of the state's fifty-five summits higher than 14,000 feet. All photos in these galleries may be ordered as fine art framed prints or for stock photography usage.
