| Elk Ridge, Utah. The dirt road which traverses the long spine of Elk Ridge passes through scattered groves of yellow aspen trees on its way from Canyonlands National Park to Natural Bridges National Monument. The elevation above sea level is not quite high enough here to provide ideal growing conditions for this member of the willow family. Unlike the extensive aspen groves of Colorado which rely on a dependable summer monsoon season and deep winter snows for their moisture, these trees receive much less winter snowpack and must rely on only scattered thunderstorms during the late summer.
