| San Juan Mountains, Colorado. Few if any locations in the West can compete with the Colorado Rockies when it comes to brilliant displays of autumn color and few places in the Colorado Rockies can compete with the displays found in the San Juan Mountains. With its combination of rugged snowcapped peaks and vast aspen groves, the San Juan Mountains near Telluride present a breathtaking show of autumn color during the last week of September and the first week of October. This grove, located along Leopard Creek near Dallas Divide carpets the slopes beneath the Sneffels Range at the northern edge of the San Juans. This 4,000 square-mile mountain range began to rise as a series of volcanic peaks at the beginning of the Laramide Orogeny about 60 million years ago.
