| Aspen trees, Colorado. Known as Populus Tremuloides to any botanist, aspen trees range across North America from Mexico to the Arctic Circle. Growing at elevations between 6,000 and 10,500 feet in the Rocky Mountain West, the state of Colorado provides vast areas of ideal habitat for this species. This tree is often referred to as "quaking" aspen due to the tendency of its leaves to flutter in even the slightest of breezes. This constant flutter is due to the stem being flattened lengthwise which allows it to easily twist in the wind. This grove of aspen is located just above Maroon Lake near the town of Aspen, Colorado. All photos in these galleries may be ordered as fine art framed prints or for stock photography usage. |
