| Maroon Creek Aspen. The mountains along West Maroon Creek just outside the town of Aspen have some of the most spectacular aspen groves to be found anywhere in the West. Located along the trail to Crater Lake, this particular grove reached its vivid peak during the last week of September. This one grove usually provides the most brilliantly-colored aspen above Maroon Lake. During this week, the 8-mile paved road from Aspen to Maroon Lake turns into a thorofare for cyclists, roller bladers, runners and roller skiers as they admire these fleeting colors.
