| Autumn Maples, Wasatch Mountains, Utah. The lower-elevation forests of the Wasatch Mountains are not dominated by the vast groves of aspen found higher in the mountains. Here at the 6,000' level in Millcreek Canyon, the dominant trees are the Rocky Mountain Maple, with its bright red leaves come autumn, and the Box Elder which turns bright yellow. This palette of colors resembles more the hardwood forests found in the eastern half of the U.S. as opposed to the monochromatic yellow groves of aspen which the mountain west is best known for.
