First Snow on Mount Timpanogos, Wasatch Mountains, Utah.    ID# 617-FC-112
Wasatch Autumn, Utah. The Alpine Loop road provides ideal access to some of the most vibrant displays of autumn-colored aspen in the Rocky Mountain West. Beginning in American Fork Canyon under the north face of Mount Timpanogos and ending about 15 miles later near Sundance Resort beneath the southeast face of the mountain, the Alpine Loop road winds its way through extensive aspen groves high on the shoulders of this rugged glacier-scoured peak. At 11,750 feet above sea level, the snow-capped summit of Mount Timpanogos provides a spectacular backdrop for these groves of yellow aspen trees where the first snows of winter will occasionally coincide with the peak color change. Reminiscent more of the Canadian Rockies than the other mountains here in the Wasatch Range of northern Utah, the high-alpine cirques of Mount Timpanogos were buried beneath enormous glaciers during the height of the Pleistocene Epoch about 20,000 years ago.
