| North Falls, Oregon. Silver Falls State Park in Oregon contains a large number of truly spectacular waterfalls with North Falls arguably the most dramatic. Plunging 136 feet over a shelf of resistant basalt along North Silver Creek, the erosive action of the water has carved an enormous grotto behind the fall. A short trail drops down from the road above and passes behind the waterfall into this grotto for a rather unique view of the falls. A local photographer by the name of June Drake "discovered" and named all the falls in Silver Falls State Park back in the 1880s. Most of the waterfalls in the park were formed as streams cut down through a layer cake of lava flows of varying hardness. The harder, more resistant rock layer thus formed a lip for the waterfall. All photos in these galleries may be ordered as fine art framed prints or for stock photography usage. |
