| San Juan Mountains, Colorado. The pyramid-like summit of Fuller Peak rises 13,761’ above Ice Lake Basin in the San Juan Mountains of southwest Colorado. Located just west of the town of Silverton in the heart of the San Juan Mountains, glacier-scoured Ice Lake Basin contains several beautiful high alpine lakes such as Fuller Lake as seen here. At an elevation of 12,585 feet above sea level, Fuller Lake doesn't normally melt out until late in the month of June. This 4,000 square-mile mountain range began to rise as a series of volcanic peaks at the beginning of the Laramide Orogeny about 60 million years ago. The eroded remains of these volcanoes were sculpted by deep glaciers which covered this region 20,000 years ago during the Pleistocene Epoch.
