| Amethyst Lake, Canadian Rockies. Hidden from view just 14 miles southwest of the town of Jasper in the province of Alberta, the imposing mountain wall of The Ramparts rises 3000 feet out of the waters of Amethyst Lake in the Tonquin Valley to create one of the most remarkable settings in all of the Canadian Rockies. A small, ephemeral hole in the clouds to the east allowed the rising sun to illuminate the knife-edged ridgeline with a jagged band of light for less than 5 minutes. Amethyst Lake may be reached on foot or horseback by traveling 10 miles up the Astoria River valley on the Mount Edith Cavell Trail.
