Antelope Flats, Grand Teton Park. A June display of Arrow Leaf Balsam fills the sagebrush-covered meadows of Antelope Flats in Grand Teton National Park as the first light of day illuminates the Teton Range in the distance. Nowadays these fields could best be called Bison Flats as wild herds of bison numbering more than 100 animals graze here during much of the year. In 1860 an estimated 60 million bison roamed the American West. Twenty years later, they had been hunted to near extinction. These bison in Grand Teton Park are descendents of the last 25 wild bison which remained hidden in the wilds of the Yellowstone Plateau at the end of this appalling slaughter over 100 years ago. All photos in these galleries may be ordered as fine art framed prints or for stock photography usage.
