Trail Ridge, Rocky Mountain National Park. Long before European explorers crossed the Atlantic Ocean, Ute Indians used this 12,000- foot windswept ridgeline to cross the continental divide. While the tree-choked canyon bottoms were difficult to traverse, this above-timberline route made for "easy" passage. Nowadays, this ridge provides a route for one of the highest paved roads in North America and provides summer pasture for herds of elk trying to escape the heat and bugs in the valley bottoms. Magenta-colored 14,255-foot Long's Peak, the highest in this part of Colorado, reflects the last light of day on the horizon to the left center of this image. All photos in these galleries may be ordered as fine art framed prints or for stock photography usage.
