Mount Moran, Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming ID# 617-WY-TE-110
Mount Moran, Grand Teton National Park. Early-morning sun illuminates Falling Ice and Skillet Glaciers on the east face of 12,605-foot Mount Moran in Grand Teton National Park. The massive granitic bulk of Mount Moran does not pierce the northwestern Wyoming sky to the height of Grand Teton, but its sheer bulk dominates the skyline for miles around. The mountain bears the name of landscape artist Thomas Moran, who traveled through this region in the last half of the nineteenth century to paint sweeping landscapes of the American West. Born in Bolton, England in 1837 to a hand-loom weaver, his travels throughout the American West forged his career as one of America's greatest landscape painters. His magnificent paintings were instrumental in inspiring congress to establish Yellowstone National Park in 1872 and the National Park system in 1916. To learn more about his work visit this park service website: http://www.cr.nps.gov/museum/exhibits/moran/ All photos in these galleries may be ordered as fine art framed prints or for stock photography usage.
