| Canyon Ruins. At the geologic center of the massive Monument upward, which stretches from the confluence of the Colorado and Green Rivers in Utah to Kayenta, Arizona in the south, Cedar Mesa is a high plateau dissected by countless deep sandstone canyons. The high elevation of Cedar Mesa provided excellent hunting grounds and an escape from the desert heat for the Ancestral Puebloan culture which flourished here during Europe's Dark Ages. Countless ruins occupy sheltered locations in every major canyon on Cedar Mesa with many yet undiscovered. The sandstone overhang above this ruin is said to resemble the billowy underside of a towering thunderhead.
