The Great Gallery, Southern Utah ID# 617-PIC-33
The Great Gallery pictograph panel, Utah. Of all the ancient rock art sites in North America, the Great Gallery is without a doubt, one of the most powerful. These ghost-like, life-sized anthropomorphic figures extend out of the frame on both sides of this panorama image and decorate a one-hundred foot section of the cliff face. This wonderful panel has been describes as perhaps the most significant rock art site in North America and defines the Barrier Canyon style of ancient rock art found in other areas across the Colorado Plateau. The dating of rock art is still quite difficult and estimates for this site vary between 2,000 and 7,000 years old. Protected from the weather at the base of a large overhang, these figures will most likely still cast their gaze across the canyon when our industrial civilization is but a memory. While this site is protected within the national park system and is staffed by a backcountry ranger every day, it is still vulnerable to damage from ignorant visitors. A father and his two sons were successfully prosecuted in 1992 for scrawling graffiti with charcoal across pictographs at this site. All photos in these galleries may be ordered as fine art framed prints or for stock photography usage.
