| Grand Canyon, Arizona. Deep in the Grand Canyon, the last light of day reflects off the surface of the Colorado River one-half mile below Lava Falls Rapid. As the culmination of all Grand Canyon float trips, Lava Falls contains some of the largest waves of any river on the North America continent. Located just out of the frame to the left, Toroweap Point provides hiking access to the bottom of the canyon at Lava Falls and one of the only access points from above along this stretch of river. This region in the Grand Canyon saw huge volcanic eruptions which ended as recently as 30,000 years ago. For the last million years, periodic eruptions poured hot lava into the canyon and once dammed the Colorado River to a depth of 2,000 feet at this location.
