Coyote Buttes, Arizona. The Navajo Sandstone formations on the Paria Plateau in Northern Arizona are world renowned. Bizarre hoodoos, towers, and multi-colored sandstone basins provide an amazing collection of geologic oddities. Located at the eastern edge of the massive Kaibab uplift through which the Colorado River cut the Grand Canyon, the Paria Plateau region has been subjected to massive tectonic forces over the ages. The vivid cross-bedding seen here in Coyote Buttes is a result of multiple layers of windblown sand sweeping across the faces of the 190 million-year old dunes which once covered this region, reminiscent of today's Sahara Desert. All photos in these galleries may be ordered as fine art framed prints or for stock photography usage.
