| Lime Creek, San Juan River, Utah. For all the sweeping panoramic vistas of the Colorado Plateau in southern Utah, some of the most beautiful images lie right at our feet. This image was made along Lime Creek just off the San Juan River as the late-afternoon sun illuminated a canyon rim above the stream. Late-summer monsoon rains often fill the normally-dry bed of Lime Creek with torrents of raging water. As these mineral-laden waters evaporate, they encrust everything along the canyon floor with a white layer of alkaline salts. These white deposits take on a deep blue color cast in the late afternoon due to the fill light provided by the clear sky overhead.
