| These bizarre pinnacles lie hidden in a remote and desolate region of southern Utah. Along this canyon, a very soft siltstone layer within the Carmel Formation has eroded into tall pinnacles wherever blocks of the overlying layer of more resistant Dakota sandstone have prevented rain from washing away the softer siltstone beneath it. This eroded siltstone takes on the look of dripping-melted candle wax and continues to erode today at a very rapid rate. While small pockets of this material occur throughout the local area, these pinnacles are the most beautiful this photographer has found thus far.
