Towers of the Virgin, Zion National Park, Utah    ID# 617-UT-ZN-84

Zion National Park, Utah. Frosted with early-season snow at 7,500 feet, the Navajo Sandstone formation known as "The Sundial" glows as the first rays of light illuminate the Towers of the Virgin in Zion National Park. Soaring more than 3,500 feet above the valley floor, this enormous wall of Navajo Sandstone is often dusted with snow during a typical Zion winter. The high plateaus of Zion form the headwaters of the Virgin River and these winter snows provide most of the water which flows out of the canyon and through the rapidly growing towns of southwestern Utah. As the population of this region continues to explode, the demands on this small, desert River increase accordingly. For now, most plans to dam the North Fork and the East Fork of the Virgin have been tabled. All photos in these galleries may be ordered as fine art framed prints or for stock photography usage.
