Fiery Furnace, Arches National Park, Utah    ID# 617-UT-AR-20
Arches National Park, Utah. Evening light illuminates sandstone towers in the Fiery Furnace of Arches National Park in southern Utah. These pinnacles of Entrada sandstone were formed as a vast salt dome underlying this area bulged upwards and cracked the overlying layers of brittle sandstone to form myriads of long sandstone fins. Many of these fins now contain the arches this park is so famous for. Even today, as the underlying salt is exposed to the processes of erosion, rainwater easily dissolves and continues to flush these salts down the Colorado River. Rising to nearly 13,000' in the distance, the La Sal (salt) Mountains reflect late February light from a recent dusting of snow.
