Lake Powell, Glen Canyon, Utah.  Kayaking on Lake Powell with the reservoir’s water level 140 feet below its normal full-pool elevation. While the “bathtub” ring formed by the lake is very pronounced along the walls of this canyon, in other locations along the reservoir, it is being quickly obliterated as water running down the cliffs stains the rock in more familiar red tones. By the spring of 2005 when this image was made, due to a prolonged drought in the western US, the waters of Lake Powell had dropped to this level not seen since 1969 when the reservoir was first filling. Renowned for its spectacular deep and narrow sandstone canyons, Glen Canyon was flooded by the waters of Lake Powell when the diversion tunnels around Glen Canyon Dam were screwed shut in 1963.
