| Lake Powell, Glen Canyon, Utah. Kayaking in Forbidding Canyon on Lake Powell with the reservoir’s water level 140 feet below its normal full-pool elevation. The “bathtub” ring formed by the lake can be seen across the canyon. By the spring of 2005 when this image was made, due to a prolonged drought in the western US, the waters of Lake Powell had dropped to this level not seen since 1969 when the reservoir was first filling. Renowned for its spectacular deep and narrow sandstone canyons, Glen Canyon was flooded by the waters of Lake Powell when the diversion tunnels around Glen Canyon Dam were screwed shut in 1963. |
