Lake Louise, Canadian Rockies. The glacial-clad summit of 11,365-foot Mount Victoria reflects in the calm waters of Lake Louise in Banff National Park. The peak was named by Norman Collie, the leader of the first party to climb the mountain in 1897, to commemorate Queen Victoria who reigned over the British Commonwealth and Empire for sixty-four years until her death in 1901. One of the classic alpine ridge routes of the Canadian Rockies ascends the south summit along the exposed southeast ridge seen to the left of the summit. The stunning color of the lake is due to light being scattered by tiny particles of glacial silt suspended in the water and introduced into the lake by the meltwater from Victoria Glacier.
