Banff National Park, Canada. An early-morning kayaker glides silently across the cerulean waters of Waterfowl Lake beneath 10,850-foot Mount Chephren in Banff National Park. Taking its name from the famous Egyptian Pharaoh of the 4th Dynasty around 2500 B.C., Mount Chephren lies along the crest of Canada’s Continental Divide and forms the border between Alberta and British Columbia. Vast glaciers filled these valleys during the Pleistocene epoch which ended about 12,000 years ago. As these ice sheets melted, they left in their wake a string of glistening lakes all along this valley.
