Arches National Park. Evening light illuminates sandstone towers in this photograph of the Fiery Furnace of Arches National Park in southern Utah. These pinnacles of Entrada sandstone were formed as a vast salt dome underlying this area bulged upwards and cracked the overlying layers of brittle sandstone to form myriads of long free-standing sandstone fins. The arches were formed when large chunks of sandstone fell out of these fins. Named by a Spanish explorer in 1876 and rising to nearly 13,000' in the distance, the La Sal (salt) Mountains reflect late February light from a recent dusting of snow. This horizontal photograph was captured using a 6x7 format camera. All photos in these fine art photo galleries may be ordered as fine art framed prints or for stock photography usage.
