| Zion National Park, Utah. A hiker is dwarfed by the soaring Navajo Sandstone cliffs in Orderville Canyon in Zion National Park. Orderville canyon is a major tributary of the North Fork of the Virgin River. The two canyons meet in a spectacular confluence deep in the Narrows of Zion Canyon. At this point, both canyons are only about 20 feet wide and 2000-feet deep. Since this entire region was pushed upwards by colossal geologic forces beginning about 10 million years ago, the sandstone layer-cake of the Colorado Plateau has been incised with countless deep, narrow canyons. Zion National Park contains some of the most spectacular examples of these forces. |
