Glen Canyon, Utah. Hiking along one of the many narrow side canyons which drain into Lake Powell in southern Utah. At this location, the reservoir was 25’ deep as recently as 1999 when the reservoir last topped off. Before the reservoir flooded this maze of spectacular canyons, Glen Canyon was ground zero for the highest concentration of narrow sandstone canyons on the planet. Due to the recent drought, the upper reaches of many of these canyons have emerged from the water for the first time in over 30 years. Two years of above-average snowpack have since raised the level of the reservoir about 60 feet. With increasing demands on the Colorado River, it will take many, many years of above-average snowfall to fill Lake Powell to its normal elevation of 3700 feet above sea level.
