Escalante Canyons, Utah. Rappelling into a narrow slot canyon along the Escalante River in Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Utah. While the main canyon of the Escalante River is relatively wide, many of the tributary canyons of the river have cut deep, narrow slots into the Navajo and Wingate sandstone which line the river. Some are so narrow that it is sometimes difficult to squeeze through sideways even without a backpack. The Navajo and Wingate Sandstones which line the Escalante River are ideal for creating these narrowest of slot canyons.
