Peekaboo Gulch, Utah. Hiker standing beneath a natural bridge in Peekaboo Gulch in Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, Utah. The upper reaches of Coyote Gulch along the Escalante River contain miles and miles of some of the narrowest slot canyons on the Colorado Plateau. While less than ¼ mile long, the lower portion of Peekaboo Gulch is one of the most beautifully-sculpted and is easily accessed via a short hike from the trailhead. Amid withering vociferous local opposition, Grand Staircase Escalante was established in 1994 by President Clinton to protect some of the most spectacular canyon country on the Colorado Plateau between Capitol Reef National Park to the east and Bryce Canyon National Park in the west.
