Zion National Park is home to countless ephemeral waterfalls which rise from the rocks every time it rains. Within several hours of the cloudbursts which create these displays, the waterfalls have vanished. The perennial stream which produces the small waterfall in this photograph along Zion Canyon may increase in volume a hundred fold in a matter of minutes as late-summer monsoon thunderstorms dump copious quantities of water on Navajo Sandstone basins just upstream. The flood waters produced during these episodes can quickly turn the normally-calm Virgin River into a dangerous torrent of rocks, logs, and other debris as it sweeps its way along the floor of Zion Canyon. This panoramic photograph was captured with a 6x17 panorama format camera. All photos in these fine art photo galleries may be ordered as fine art framed prints or for stock photography usage.
